Chapter Fifteen

Michael riffled through the pages of one of the books Lionel had kept under lock and key in a glass case. The book was bound in burgundy leather, and the pages were of the finest, almost fragile paper, edged with gold leaf.

"Don't think there's going to be anything about 'those who bring curses down on people' in here," he said to Jonathan, who was leafing through a tome he'd found on one of the study shelves. They had just finished dinner and decided to take their coffee into the study to make a quick sortie through some of the hundreds of books that lined the walls.

"Nothing in here either." Jonathan closed the book with a loud slap. "What we need is an inventory of the books you have here."

"Don't know where that might be," Michael muttered. "I haven't really had time to go through all this stuff." He added tartly, "A certain person I met shortly after I arrived in this fair country has been taking up most of my time in the most demanding ways."

"Oh?" Jonathan replaced the book on the shelf, then pulled Michael into his arms. "And who would that be?" He nuzzled Michael's nose. "Should I be jealous?"

"Mmm..." Michael gave in to the kiss Jonathan placed on his lips. "I could get so used to you," he murmured.

"I hope so." Jonathan's voice was husky. "I intend for you to get used to me."

A discreet knock on the study door had them standing back from one another and Jonathan picking another book from the shelf. Matthew poked his head in.

"Will there be anything else this evening, gentlemen?" he asked.

"No thanks, Matthew." Michael gave the butler a warm smile. "If we need anything, we'll just help ourselves. Tell Mrs. Mac the dinner was excellent as always. Oh ... actually, there is something. Would you happen to know if there's an inventory for all the books in here?"

"Why yes, Mr. Burroughs was very particular about it,"

Matthew replied, walking towards the desk. "I believe he kept it in the top, right-hand drawer there. Some of the books he purchased along with the house. Dust collectors, my wife called them, but he wanted them all; wouldn't part with any of them."

Michael unlocked the top, right-hand drawer and pulled it open, drawing out a leather-bound file. "This must be it.

Thanks again, Matthew."

"You're welcome, Mr. Michael. Now, if that's all, I shall retire for the evening. Goodnight, gentlemen."

"Goodnight," Michael and Jonathan chorused.

"Wow, look at this," Michael said, enthused. "Old Lionel was really particular about keeping records of what he had here—all alphabetized by author and title. Okay, let's see ...

Curses..."

"Look for witchcraft or warlocks," Jonathan suggested.

"Okay ... yeah ... two entries under warlocks: 'Warlocks, History of" and 'Warlocks in the Twentieth Century,' bay five, shelf six. Wow, he's making this really easy..."

"I'll say." Jonathan brandished the two books. "That's what I call organized."

"Okay, you take a look at those." Michael was turning back the pages of the inventory list.
